The 3 Spiritual Skills You Must Have to Fulfill Your God-Given Purpose
So you've discovered your God-given purpose and you are ready to pursue it! Before you go off chasing your dreams, there are 3 spiritual skills you must have in order to ensure your success. Let's dive in, shall we?
1. The Ability to Read and Understand Scripture
I didn't say these are hard spiritual skills! Just that they're necessary. Fortunately, reading and understanding the Bible is easier than ever. With study bibles, bible apps, and Google, you can read the Bible anytime and look up anything you don't understand. So there is really no excuse for not reading it.
The Bible is the foundation for how we are to live and operate as Christians. There's no getting around this one. The more we spend time in God's word, the more we become like him and reflect his love.
"Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame." -Psalm 34:5
2. The Ability to Discern God's Voice
This one's a bit harder. And you cannot do this without spending time in God's word. As believers, we have the spirit of God living inside of us. The Bible describes the Holy Spirit as a "helper" (also "advocate" in some versions). In John 14:16, Jesus says:
"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever." -John 14:16
God gave us His spirit to help us, to teach, guide, and direct us. That means that God speaks to us through the promptings of the Holy Spirit. And if He's speaking, it's imperative that we know how to listen. We need to know what His voice sounds like and what it does not sound like.
A quick way to test if something you hear is from God is to see if it is consistent with His character as shown in the Bible. Again, this is why it is so important for us to hide scripture in our hearts.
If we master this skill, we never need to be concerned about failing, because we know that God is guiding us, step by step.
3. The Ability to Rest
This one may surprise you, but it is absolutely essential. God does not want you to work yourself to death, and because of that He's commanded us to rest. Again, this isn't just a "should" do, it's necessary if you want to be able to do what God has called you to do long-term. And I know you want you do!
Remember how we talked about being able to hear God's voice? Well, busyness and exhaustion are breeding grounds for anxiety, and anxiety talks louder than God.
We need to make space for God to speak to us. We need to quiet all the other voices, even our own. We need to be refreshed and renewed so we can be inspired and inspire others.
We need not be in a hurry, because God is the orchestrator of our lives. He's holding it all perfectly in His hand, perfectly under control.
